To grow the AK-47 strain, give it 18/6 light in veg, flip it to 12/12 after about seven weeks indoors, and keep its height in check with topping and LST. It finishes in just 8 to 9 weeks of flower and can yield up to 575 g/m² indoors (about 1.9 oz/sq ft) or 650 g (around 23 oz) per plant outdoors. This hybrid, built from genetics from different corners of the world, is famous for its potent effects and unique terpene profile, blending sativa and indica traits into a balanced, uplifting-then-relaxing high.

With the right care, you'll end up with a tough, productive plant, perfect for growers who want a rewarding grow and a final product that's big on potency and flavor.

We'll also share tips on dialing in your environment and maxing out yield with this strain, which works for beginners and seasoned growers alike who want a high-quality, low-maintenance plant.

AK-47 strain characteristics

AK-47 weed is a well-loved strain known for its adaptability, vigorous growth and generous harvests. It grows with a sativa-leaning structure, reaching 140 to 170 cm (4.5 to 5.5 ft) outdoors and up to 140 cm indoors if you don't train it.

If you'd rather keep plants compact, low-stress training (LST), topping and other training methods can bring it down to about 80 cm (2.5 ft) indoors and 130 cm (4.3 ft) outdoors. Flowering is fast, with well-formed, resin-coated buds in just 8 to 9 weeks.

Yields are big, up to 575 g/m² indoors and 650 g per plant outdoors, which makes it a great pick if you want a lot of weed in a short time.

AK-47 flavor and aroma

AK-47 stands out for its terpene profile, inherited from its four parent strains. Expect fruity, earthy and musky notes, driven by compounds like myrcene and limonene.

Those terpenes add up to a complex, layered flavor with subtle hints of strawberry. On top of that, volatile sulfur compounds bring a distinctive fuel-and-skunk funk that comes through on every hit.

You'll pick up these flavors however you consume it, but they really shine when you vape at low temperatures, which brings out the fruity and earthy notes.

AK-47 strain effects

Smoking or vaping AK-47 gives you an uplifting, inspiring buzz that's great for anything that needs focus, like reading, writing or creative projects. Over time, it settles into a deep, relaxing body high.

At higher doses, the effects lean toward full-on relaxation, perfect for unwinding or watching a movie. That versatility makes it a strain for any time of day, whether you need energy or downtime.

How do you grow AK-47 cannabis?

Royal AK, Royal Queen Seeds' take on AK-47, is a sturdy, easy strain to grow, perfect for beginners and experienced growers alike. Its medium size, fast flowering time and all-around resilience make it a versatile pick. Here's how to take it from seed to harvest and get the most out of these genetics.

Germinating AK-47 seeds

  • To speed up germination, soak your seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting them in a seedling tray with a high-quality growing medium.
  • Sprinkle a little mycorrhizal powder into each hole to boost root development and nutrient uptake while also helping protect against fungal pathogens.
  • Keep the temperature around 25 °C (77 °F) and humidity at 70-80% so the seedlings pop quickly.
  • During the first week, keep the lights on 24 hours a day so the plants don't stretch too much. Once the true leaves outgrow the tray cells, transplant the seedlings into 10-20 liter (roughly 3-5 gallon) containers.

What does the AK-47 vegetative stage look like?

When the vegetative stage kicks in, switch your light cycle to 18 hours on and 6 off for optimal growth. By week two, plants will be about 8 cm (3 in) tall, and around 15 cm (6 in) by week three. If you want to keep them a manageable size, use techniques like topping and LST.

If you're growing outdoors, move the plants to a sunny, sheltered spot once the risk of frost has passed. By the end of veg, plants will be somewhere between 60 and 130 cm (2 to 4.3 ft), depending on container size and the training techniques you used.

For indoor grows, flip the lights to 12/12 at the end of week seven of veg to trigger flowering.

The AK-47 flowering stage

In flower, Royal AK tends to stretch as flowering hormones ramp up. Indoors, trained plants in small containers top out around 80 cm, while untrained ones can hit 140 cm.

Outdoors, expect 130 cm with training and up to 170 cm without it. Defoliation is key at this stage: it improves airflow, cuts the risk of mold and makes sure the buds get direct light.

After a flowering period of just 8-9 weeks, you can harvest around 525-575 g/m² indoors.

Outdoors, Royal AK yields up to 650 g per plant and is ready to harvest in early October in the Northern Hemisphere (around early April south of the equator).
