Grass Is Greener

The best cannabis documentaries to stream include Grass Is Greener and Weed the People, which have both been on Netflix, plus The Culture High and Super High Me on Amazon Prime Video (catalogs change by country and over time, so double-check before you settle in). In Grass Is Greener, Fred Brathwaite, better known as Fab 5 Freddy, opens by lighting up and telling the camera he's been a cannabis connoisseur and advocate for a long time. From there, he takes viewers through the history of the bond between music and marijuana in the US, from Cab Calloway's 1932 jazz hit “Reefer Man” to modern hip-hop and rap.

Grass Is Greener is packed with sharp insight from academics and music experts, and with stories of musicians who pushed for legal weed long before it was cool. Louis Armstrong, for one, famously joked that all he wanted was a permit to carry the good stuff.

With help from Killer Mike, Snoop Dogg and B-Real, Freddy lays out how America's insistence on cannabis prohibition was fueled by fear of Black culture and Mexican immigration.

Weed the People

In Weed the People, director Abby Epstein takes apart the “gateway drug” argument with help from doctors and cannabis advocates. She also turns her lens on what the film describes as Big Pharma's role in keeping marijuana illegal for more than 80 years.

The documentary dives deep into the controversial world of parents seeking medical cannabis for children with cancer and other serious illnesses, drawn by its reputation for easing muscle tension and stimulating appetite. Pediatrician and medical cannabis specialist Bonni Goldstein puts it this way in the film: for a family in crisis it can feel like a miracle, but it's really just science, chemicals in a plant that act like any other drug. It's an informative and deeply human documentary.

The Culture High

The Culture High is the perfect primer on everything to do with cannabis laws. It gives viewers a deep look at prohibition in North America, from the failed war on drugs to why cannabis was outlawed in the first place, and it digs into these issues in detail.

The filmmakers pitch it as a story that tears into the very fabric of modern marijuana prohibition to expose the real arguments and motives driving both supporters and opponents of current marijuana laws.

Super High Me

Probably one of the most famous cannabis documentaries out there, Super High Me was a groundbreaking spoof of Super Size Me. For the film, comedian Doug Benson quit cannabis for a 30-day cleanse, then smoked or ate weed every single day for the next 30 days.

During both the 30-day cleanse and the 30 days of cannabis, Benson went through a battery of tests to check his physical and mental health. Some of the results were surprising, others were no big deal. Either way, at the time it was huge for the cannabis world to have a documentary break into the mainstream the way Super High Me did.
