CBD Cocktails and Cannabis Mixology: 2 Recipes and the Questions Nobody's Answered Yet

Cannabis drinks are everywhere, the science hasn't caught up, and bartenders are already pouring CBD into mezcal and gin. Here's the state of play and two recipes to try.

Cannabis mixology is the craft of building cocktails with cannabis ingredients, most often a few drops of alcohol-based CBD tincture, which adds a relaxed vibe without the THC high. With recreational weed now legal in several US states, cannabis-infused cocktails, sparkling waters and alcohol-free wines have flooded the market.

These cannabis drinks are pitched as a healthier, hangover-free option and they've caught on fast, but doctors and cannabis researchers have concerns and plenty of open questions about their safety and effects.

Cannabis drinks: risks and unanswered questions

Weed drinks promise a buzz without the regrets that come with booze, but experts point to real risks and questions without clear answers. There hasn't been thorough research on the health effects of cannabis beverages, which raises concerns about the best way to consume them and what they may do to the brain and body.

Are CBD and THC drinks a healthy alternative?

For all the wellness vibes these CBD and THC drinks try to give off, health professionals warn about possible risks and say the concerns need to be addressed before these products get even more popular.

Between the lack of clear regulation and the uncertainty about long-term health effects, cannabis drinks are a puzzle for consumers and experts alike.

Research can't keep up with cannabis drinks

Demand for these drinks is growing so fast it may outpace research, leaving doctors and scientists with a knowledge gap about the risks and benefits. The question remains: are they really a healthy alternative, or a potential health risk? As the industry evolves, the need for deeper research and clear regulation gets more pressing.

That's why, this time around, we're talking cannabis mixology and cocktails.

Mixology vs. bartending: what's the difference?

Mixology is an art that goes way beyond pouring drinks; it's become a hotbed of innovation where one-of-a-kind cocktails are born. It takes skill, but also a deep understanding of ingredients and the chemistry behind a mix. Its roots are often traced to Prohibition in the United States (1920 to 1933), when speakeasies came up with elaborate cocktails to mask the low-quality liquor on hand.

Since then, mixology has gone through a huge transformation, with a focus on fresh ingredients, refined techniques and close attention to quality and presentation. Modern mixologists don't stick to the classics; they explore new flavors and experiences and push cocktails into wild new territory.

Classic bartending, on the other hand, focuses on the fundamentals of making traditional cocktails and nailing specific recipes behind the bar. Bartenders learn the basic tools and perfect techniques like shaking, straining, serving and flaming. There's showmanship and presentation, sure, but classic bartending usually follows the house recipes.

Mixology isn't happy with the conventional. It's always looking for new ways to surprise your palate. Mixologists experiment with unusual flavor combinations and advanced tools that take the drinking experience up a notch.

That bold, creative approach is what makes mixology an art that keeps evolving, pushing past the traditional limits of the cocktail bar.

CBD cocktail recipes you can make at home

CBD fans have found a whole new kind of fun in cocktails, where cannabis tinctures like CBD have become the surprise ingredient that changes the drinking experience.

As recreational weed goes legal in more US states, skilled mixologists are diving into cocktails that taste great and offer a relaxing effect without the high that comes with THC.

Alcohol-based CBD tinctures are the mixologist's go-to for blending the cannabinoid smoothly into a drink. These cannabis-infused cocktails are marketed as a way to deal with stress, trouble sleeping and pain, a supposedly healthier route to a chill, carefree state of mind.
