CBD for Focus: Can It Really Help You Concentrate?

Less stress, better sleep, maybe sharper memory: what the research says about CBD and concentration.

CBD may help you focus indirectly: research suggests it can ease everyday stress and anxiety and improve sleep, and when you're calmer and better rested, it's easier to concentrate. It's not a smart pill, though. Shifting priorities, screens and the demands of daily life make it hard to stay on task, and a recent study found that workplace distractions leave about half of us feeling significantly less productive than we'd be without them.

At work, the list includes chatty coworkers, phones going off and even meetings. Going from the office to remote work was a great fix for some people, while others found their minds wandering in the comfort of home: procrastinating, drifting off to watch a show or tidying up when they should've been working.

Wherever we work, there'll be distractions. Luckily, we don't have to let them wreck our productivity, because there are tools that can help.

How can CBD help you focus?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is extracted from the cannabis plant and interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a key role in regulating memory, immune response and a lot more. Our bodies make endocannabinoids all the time, whether we use CBD products or not. The idea behind CBD products is that they may support the body's own endocannabinoids.

By working with the ECS, CBD may bring a sense of calm that helps you focus, by easing daily stress and occasional anxiety. Feeling less stressed and anxious naturally makes it easier to concentrate on the task at hand. CBD may also help reduce exercise-induced inflammation and improve sleep quality.

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that a single 600 mg dose of CBD increased blood flow to the hippocampus, the part of the brain in charge of processing memory.

A 2018 review published through the National Institutes of Health database also pointed to several ways CBD might support mental health and sharpness. According to that research, mostly in animals, CBD may promote the growth of new neurons in the brain, which could help explain why some people find it helpful for occasional anxiety, low mood and trouble focusing.

Beyond focus, there's some evidence that CBD may support memory too. A review of clinical studies in the Journal of Cannabis Research points to a positive link between CBD use and improvements in attention, executive function, working memory and episodic memory.

How CBD may improve concentration: what's going on

CBD interacts with systems tied to neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Whenever you're stressed, your body starts pumping out cortisol. High cortisol can mess with your ability to focus and make it hard to think clearly. CBD may help keep this in check by influencing how much cortisol your body releases. In theory, that leaves more room for dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters that affect memory, focus, energy and motivation. In short, CBD may help you stay on top of the important stuff you face every day.

Is there a specific CBD dose for focus?

Unfortunately, there's no one CBD dose that works for everyone's focus or concentration. That's because everybody's body is different, and what works for one person won't necessarily work for the next. To find your sweet spot, start with a small dose twice a day and work up from there until you feel the effect you want. More and more doctors are studying the ECS and how CBD affects the body, so checking in with a professional is always a good idea.

What are the benefits of CBD for memory and focus?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most studied and promising compounds in cannabis. Its effects are still being researched, but several potential benefits for memory and concentration have been reported. Here are some of them:

  1. Less stress and anxiety: CBD may help reduce stress and anxiety, which can make it easier to focus and remember things.
  2. Better sleep: CBD may also help improve sleep quality, which can have a positive impact on memory and concentration.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: CBD may have anti-inflammatory properties that could support brain health and memory.
  4. Neuroprotective: CBD may also act as a neuroprotectant, helping protect brain cells and support brain function.

What causes trouble concentrating?

Trouble concentrating can have a bunch of causes. Here are some of the most common ones:

  1. Stress and anxiety: both can drag down your focus and your ability to pay attention.
  2. Lack of sleep: not sleeping enough can hurt your concentration and your short-term memory.
  3. Not enough exercise: physical activity matters for brain health and better focus.
  4. Poor nutrition: a diet low in key nutrients can hurt concentration and memory.
  5. Drugs or alcohol: using drugs or drinking can take a toll on concentration and memory.
  6. Medical conditions: certain conditions, like ADHD, depression and anxiety disorders, can make it harder to focus.
  7. Multitasking: trying to do several things at once makes it harder to concentrate and can affect memory.

CBD may be one tool to help with some of these.

What does CBD do to the brain?

Some studies suggest CBD may interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, which could have a positive effect on mood, anxiety and depression. CBD is also thought to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may benefit brain health.

CBD oil is commonly used as a natural remedy for anxiety and other stress-related issues. More studies are needed to fully understand what CBD does in the brain, but researchers believe it has potential to support cognitive function and memory.

The percentage of CBD in an oil varies, and the dose you need depends on several factors, like body weight and how severe your symptoms are. Talk to a doctor or other healthcare professional before taking CBD oil or any other supplement to make sure it's safe and right for you. CBD oil is usually taken sublingually: place a few drops under your tongue and hold them there for a few minutes before swallowing.
