CBD Sunscreen: Can Cannabis Really Help Protect Your Skin From the Sun?
CBD won't replace your SPF, but it may back it up: what the research suggests and which CBD sun care products are out there.
CBD doesn't block UV rays on its own, so it's not a replacement for SPF. What it can do, according to early research, is back up your sunscreen: its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may help limit the oxidative stress sun exposure causes and calm redness afterward. That's why a growing number of sunscreens and after-sun gels now pair standard UV filters with cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating cannabinoid that's already a skincare favorite.
Research on CBD for skin, along with other cannabinoids and compounds found in cannabis, points to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties that may be good for skin health. Those traits suggest CBD could help not only to limit sun damage but also to soothe and revitalize skin after a day outdoors.

Below we take a closer look at how cannabis-based skincare can support sun protection and which products are out there to take advantage of it. From countering oxidative stress to potentially reducing inflammation and supporting skin repair, we'll walk through the CBD products that are changing skincare in the age of more natural, mindful sun protection.
Sun and weed: what is CBD facial sunscreen?
In a market packed with conventional sunscreens, some with ingredients people have started to question, CBD skincare is showing up as a promising, plant-based option for protecting skin from sun damage. A number of brands are now building formulas that add CBD and other cannabinoids alongside the usual ingredients, and for some solid reasons.
Why is cannabis good for your skin?
Some chemical filters in conventional sunscreens can be absorbed through the skin, and certain ones have raised questions about hormonal effects and skin irritation, though the research is still debated. Not every product on the shelf gets the balance between effective protection and gentle formulation right.
Cannabinoids like CBD and CBG have shown strong antioxidant activity in lab studies, helping protect skin cells from free radical damage, one of the drivers of premature aging. Some research also suggests these compounds may support collagen and elastin, which help keep skin firm and healthy.
CBD cosmetics: what are the benefits?
CBD's anti-inflammatory potential makes it a popular ally against sunburn, redness and irritation. By acting on CB2 receptors, which are found in the skin and in immune cells, CBD may help regulate the skin's inflammatory response, easing inflammation and supporting healing. Some studies also suggest it can influence melanin production, which is why it's being looked at for dark spots and uneven tone, although the evidence there is still mixed.
Bottom line: a sunscreen that contains cannabinoids still protects you through its UV filters, and the CBD adds soothing, antioxidant support on top. For people who want to enjoy the outdoors while taking care of their skin with more natural ingredients, it's a smart combo, as long as you keep reapplying.

What CBD sun care products are on the market?
There's a growing range of sun care products with CBD out there, offering a more natural-leaning way to protect your skin from sun damage. Here are a few standout brands and what they sell (prices are approximate and were noted in their home markets):
Cannasun by Plant of Life
Cannasun, from the Spanish company Plant of Life, sells a line that includes a sunscreen and a moisturizing after-sun gel. The sunscreen contains 1,500 mg of CBD and 1,500 mg of CBG, with SPF 50 protection against UVA and UVB rays.
It also includes aloe vera for hydration, plus CBD, CBG and bisabolol for their soothing properties. It comes in a 150 ml (5 fl oz) bottle at an average price of about €30.
Cannasun's After Sun Gel, meanwhile, contains 5,000 mg of CBD, 1,250 mg of CBG and aloe vera, and is designed to cool and rehydrate skin after sun exposure. It comes in a 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) bottle for about €36.
Dermahemp
Dermahemp, a Colombian cannabis cosmetics company, makes a sunscreen with liposomal CBD. Liposomal technology wraps the active ingredients in tiny lipid spheres so skin cells absorb them easily and they're released quickly.
It's oil-free with a dry-touch finish, so it suits combination and oily skin. It contains aloe vera plus mineral and chemical UV filters rated SPF 50+ for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. It sells for about $23 for 60 ml (2 fl oz).
The Tree CBD
The Tree Health and Wellness, a Spanish brand, offers a sunscreen cream and an after-sun gel. Its sunscreen combines hemp seed oil, liposomal sun filters and CBD to protect, hydrate and nourish the skin.
With SPF 30 against UVA and UVB rays, it comes in a 100 ml (3.4 fl oz) tube for about €19. The after-sun gel contains CBD, aloe vera, calendula and arnica for a soothing effect on sun-exposed skin. It comes in a 100 ml container for about €8, and there's also a kit with both the sunscreen and the gel for €25.
These CBD sunscreens for face and body offer a range of perks, from UV protection to hydration and post-sun relief. With more products hitting the market, it's getting easier to find the right one for your skin type and needs. Just remember the SPF is what protects you from the sun; the CBD is the bonus.
