Is Critical Kush Any Good? Effects, Yield and How It Grows

Royal Queen Seeds' 80% indica cross of Critical and OG Kush: what the high is like, how big it gets and how much it yields.

Yes, Critical Kush is a seriously good strain, especially if you're short on space. Bred by Royal Queen Seeds from Afghani, Skunk and OG Kush, it's about 80% indica, packs around 20% THC and puts out big, dense buds both indoors and outdoors while staying compact enough for a closet grow.

Plenty of people hunt for plants with a strong (and we mean strong) THC punch, plus all the other stuff that makes a strain worth growing. If that's you, put Critical Kush on your list. You won't regret it.

Critical Kush is an indica-dominant strain loaded with THC and tasty terpenes. It was born from crossing a few legendary genetics, and it made its mark on the cannabis world as a calming, comforting smoke that can also lift your mood and bring on a solid dose of euphoria.

Critical Kush buds

Critical Kush comes from Royal Queen Seeds, one of the best-known seed banks on the planet, which set out to breathe new life into the market and put indica-dominant genetics front and center. To pull it off, the breeders went through their huge genetic library from top to bottom, and after a lot of digging the logical move was to build it on two big, sturdy, aromatic indicas.

Critical Kush genetics: where it comes from

The first parent is Critical, an indica-dominant strain that itself descends from two heavyweight genetics: Afghani and Skunk. The breeders picked it for its sweet, earthy flavor and smell, and above all for how much it yields.

The other parent added to the mix was OG Kush, chosen for its heavy indica lean, high THC and complex pine-and-fruit flavor. That means Critical Kush also traces back to OG Kush's own legendary ancestors: Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush.

The end result was a genetic makeup of roughly 80% indica and 20% sativa. Critical Kush inherited the productivity, the high THC and the terpene profile of its parents.

Because the buds get so big and dense, keep humidity under tight control in any grow, indoor or outdoor: strains like this are more prone to mold. If you don't want to toss your whole harvest (and maybe the plants next to it, since mold spreads), you should measure your humidity levels accurately and constantly so they never creep too high.

Critical Kush effects: what the high feels like

Critical Kush buds deliver a fast-acting wave of indica relaxation. A joint or a bong rip of this flower shifts your headspace almost right away. If you deal with stress, people say this strain feels like it opens an internal pressure valve: your muscles start to loosen, racing thoughts fade out, and you're left with a clear sense of calm and well-being.

A lot of people recommend it as a perfect nighttime strain, the kind that helps you wind down after a hectic day. The resinous flowers test at around 20% THC, with moderate CBD and plenty of terpenes.

As we said, that bit of CBD helps keep the high balanced, while high levels of myrcene push it toward a heavy, sedating finish. On the medical side, anecdotal reports say patients reach for Critical Kush for pain, trouble sleeping and low mood.

What does Critical Kush taste and smell like?

We already warned you about the absurd number of trichomes Critical Kush can grow, and for most of the flowering stage those trichomes crank out terpenes. Myrcene, a monoterpene, brings the fruity and earthy notes. Other terpenes add a distinct pine edge, and together they give the strain a fresh, forest-floor aroma that carries straight through to the flavor once you light it up.

Growing Critical Kush: indoor vs. outdoor

As an indica-dominant strain, Critical Kush stays short and easy to manage. It also throws out plenty of side branches, and its fan leaves have wide, chunky fingers.

Critical Kush indoors: height, flowering time and yield

Indoor plants reach about 60-100 cm (2-3.3 ft). Flowering usually wraps up in around 55-60 days, so you can harvest after roughly 8 weeks of bloom, 10 at the outside. They're easy to grow in grow boxes or converted closets if you need to stay discreet, and in that kind of setup they can yield around 500-550 g/m² (roughly 1.6-1.8 oz per sq ft) after 8-10 weeks of flowering.

Critical Kush outdoors: height and harvest date

Outdoors, growers usually keep it in raised beds or containers, where it gets a bit taller, around 100-140 cm (3.3-4.6 ft). As you can see, that's still small enough to blend in with the rest of your garden. Expect rewarding harvests of around 500-550 g (about 18-19 oz) per plant, ready to chop in late September in the Northern Hemisphere (late March in the Southern Hemisphere).

Bottom line: on top of potent effects that win everyone over, Critical Kush stands out for how discreet it is and for its massive buds, the kind other strains would be jealous of (if strains could be jealous). That makes it a standout pick for growers who don't have much room or who'd rather nobody knows they're growing something this good.
