How Far Should Grow Lights Be From Your Cannabis Plants?
LED or HID, the right hanging height is the difference between fat buds and bleached tops: here are the numbers to start from.
How far should grow lights be from cannabis plants?
A safe starting point is to hang an LED grow light about 60 cm (2 ft) above the canopy and an HID lamp 35–80 cm (14–31 in) away depending on wattage, then lower it gradually while watching the leaves. Too little light and your plants stretch and underperform; too much and you bleach or burn them. Here are the distances for the two most common indoor setups.
LED grow lights:
LEDs run a lot cooler than HID bulbs. With LEDs, the danger isn't heat, it's light intensity: the sheer amount of light hitting the tops can stress and damage the plant.
Start with the fixture about 60 cm (2 ft) above the top of your plants and lower it little by little if the plants ask for it. To check whether you've got it right, look at the color of the fan leaves. If they start to bleach or lose color, raise the light about 5 cm (2 in). If they go back to a healthy green, you're at the right height.
HID (MH, HPS):
This family covers metal halide (MH) bulbs, with a cooler, bluer light for the vegetative stage, and high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs for flowering. If you run HID, ventilation and cooling are everything, because these bulbs throw serious heat.
With solid airflow, start a smaller 250 W bulb at 35 cm (14 in) and bring it down gradually until it sits about 25 cm (10 in) from the buds in flower. With a 600 W bulb, start at 50 cm (20 in) and work down to 30 cm (12 in). A 1000 W lamp should stay at least 80 cm (31 in) away.
What are lumens, and why do they matter?
Put simply, lumens (lm) measure the total amount of visible light a lamp or light source puts out. The higher the lumen number, the brighter the bulb.
Light is huge for plant growth, whether you're running LED or sodium, so measuring your light output and keeping it under control can help you squeeze a better yield out of your grow.
How much light a plant needs depends on where it is in its life cycle. Seedlings can't handle much, but once plants hit the vegetative stage they'll take pretty much all the light you can give them. That's what lets them grow strong and reach their full potential. Same goes for flowering: even though plants do better under a different light spectrum in bloom than in veg, they still need plenty of light to pack on the biggest buds possible.

How much light do cannabis plants need at each stage?
Clones and seedlings: 5,000–7,000 lux
Vegetative stage: 15,000–50,000 lux
Flowering stage: 45,000–65,000 lux
Recommended maximum: 75,000 lux
How much light does an indoor cannabis plant need?
An indoor cannabis plant needs the right amount of light to grow healthy. Light drives photosynthesis, the process plants use to turn light energy into the chemical energy they need to develop.
In general, cannabis plants in the vegetative stage need long days of direct, intense light: most growers run 18 hours on and 6 off (18/6), because dropping to 12 hours tells photoperiod plants to start flowering. During veg, full-spectrum lights such as LEDs or other plant-specific grow lights give the plants the spectrum they need.
When it's time to flower, growers usually switch the photoperiod to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness a day. That's what triggers flower and bud production.
Keep in mind that the right intensity and type of light depend on the size of your grow space, the number of plants and the specific conditions of your setup. Some growers also use techniques like LST (low-stress training, gently bending and tying branches down) or defoliation to get more light onto the plant and keep the canopy even.
Every stage of a cannabis grow needs its own care: the right light, temperature, humidity and ventilation. Do your homework, follow good growing practices, and check the local rules and laws on growing cannabis where you live.

How far should an LED grow light be from plants indoors?
It depends on several factors, like the wattage of the light, the plant and the growth stage it's in. Here are some general guidelines to work from:
-
Seedling stage: Early on, keep the LED roughly 30–45 cm (12–18 in) from the seedlings. That keeps them from stretching too much and encourages compact, healthy growth.
-
Vegetative stage: As the plants grow and fill out, you can gradually bring the LED down to around 15–30 cm (6–12 in) from the tops. That gives them more light intensity and fuels vigorous growth.
-
Flowering stage: In bloom, cannabis needs intense light to stack buds. You can run the LED at around 15–25 cm (6–10 in) from the plants, depending on the fixture's power and how much intensity your plants can take.
Keep a close eye on how your plants grow and how they react to the light distance. If you see signs of stress, like burnt or bleached leaves, you probably need to raise the LED. On the flip side, if the plants look weak or are stretching a lot, bring the light closer.
These are general guidelines, and the sweet spot changes with the type of LED, its power and the specifics of your grow. Always check the manufacturer's recommended hanging height and adjust based on how your plants respond.
