Highest-Yielding Cannabis Strains: White Widow, Blue Dream and More

Four heavy hitters for growers who want big harvests, with yield numbers, flowering times and grow tips for each.

Some of the highest-yielding cannabis strains you can grow are White Widow, Critical Kush, Blue Dream and Purple Trainwreck, all known for heavy harvests without being divas to grow. Every grower's main goal is a potent, tasty, aromatic bud, but let's be honest: what we really want as growers is a lot of it.

Genetics, nutrients, growing medium, climate and plenty of other factors decide how much your garden yields. Genetics come first: they set the traits a plant is capable of expressing, while environmental factors are what coax those traits out as the plant grows.

Squeezing the biggest possible harvest out of limited space is the challenge every cannabis grower faces, and picking the right strain is how you get the most out of every square foot.

White Widow

White Widow is a famous Amsterdam hybrid created by crossing landrace strains from South India and Brazil. Smokers tend to love it for its insane resin production and powerful high, but growers prize it above all for the big yields White Widow delivers.

There's a reason this hybrid has stayed popular since it hit the scene in the '90s. Not only is it very productive, White Widow also resists mold and pests, and it finishes flowering in just eight to nine weeks.

White Widow grow tips

When it comes to high-yielding strains indoors, White Widow takes the crown: it can put out 450 to 500 grams per square meter (roughly 1.5 to 1.6 oz per square foot). Even better, this strain thrives outdoors and can produce around 550 to 600 grams per square meter.

Both soil and hydroponic setups work well for White Widow. Either way, we recommend running a Screen of Green (SCROG) and keeping the plants well trimmed under the net.

After eight or nine weeks, these buds are ready to harvest, and the strain is pretty easy to grow. It can be a heavy feeder, so give the plant plenty of nitrogen during veg, then flush before switching to a high-phosphorus nutrient formula.

Finally, if you want a monster harvest, top the plant during veg and use LST and defoliation so it heads into flowering with an open, airy canopy and a bigger yield.

Critical Kush

Critical Kush comes from crossing two legendary strains, Critical Mass and OG Kush. Its parent Critical Mass is known for a sweet, citrusy flavor, while OG Kush leans earthy. Put them together and Critical Kush stands out as a great blend of both, inheriting potency, flavor and heavy harvests.

Critical Kush is a strain that needs heavy feeding to make sure the mature buds come out dense, healthy and heavy. It's best grown indoors or in a greenhouse with humidity kept in check; get those right and get ready to chop a whole lot of weed.

Blue Dream

Blue Dream is one of the most popular strains in the United States. This hybrid is high-yielding, mold-resistant, delicious, easy to find and calming. It's a favorite with casual smokers trying something new, but plenty of connoisseurs and heavy users love Blue Dream for its magic, too.

Blue Dream is a great outdoor strain because it hits its full potential under the sun. It's one of those strains that thrives in a Mediterranean climate and shoots straight up toward the sky. It grows long and tall but packs dense, heavy buds, so you'll need to look after the branches.

Blue Dream grow tips: what to know

Blue Dream can be grown outdoors in its native California climate, but it does best indoors. It gets very tall, up to 1.8 meters (about 6 ft), which can be a challenge in an indoor grow.

It's a tall-stemmed plant, so it needs staking to support its height and the weight of its flowers. Blue Dream is also a hungry plant, with nitrogen at the top of its list. While most other strains need nitrogen dialed back once they start flowering, Blue Dream can handle high nitrogen levels.

Blue Dream is ready to harvest after nine or ten weeks of flowering indoors. It's a very high-yielding indoor strain that can produce up to twenty ounces (about 570 g) per plant.

Purple Trainwreck

If you're after serious yield potential, Purple Trainwreck is famous for big harvests and easy growing. Humboldt Seed Organization created it by crossing Trainwreck with Mendocino Purps. The resulting hybrid is said to be one of the best out there, with the killer aroma and effects of Trainwreck plus the weight and toughness of Mendo Purps. Purple Trainwreck delivers a euphoric, energizing high, which makes it a great pick for newer smokers looking for a smooth experience.

This strain does great both indoors and outdoors, with a flowering time of just eight weeks.

These are just a few of the highest-producing strains, but keep in mind your plant needs a lot of other care to grow healthy and strong and give you plenty of flowers. Check out other strains you might like at this link.
