How to Grow Bigger Buds: Pruning, Training, Light and Feeding
Fat, heavy colas don't happen by accident. They come from controlling where the plant puts its buds, giving them light and feeding at the right time.
How do you grow bigger buds?
Bigger buds come from three things: shaping the plant so all its bud sites sit at roughly the same height, giving every one of them strong light, and feeding the right nutrients at the right stage. Nothing beats the feeling of finding fat, picture-perfect buds in a grow you've babied for months, and it's not hard to get there if you know how to set up and maintain your plants. Monster buds are about control, light and feeding, and here's how to nail each one.
A successful cannabis grow is mostly about controlling where the plant will put its buds. Buds come from nodes, the points where leaves and branches grow off the main stem. For the biggest buds, you want all the nodes at about the same height. Plants don't naturally grow that way, so it takes a little intervention from the grower. There are two main ways to do it:
Pruning:
cut off the nodes lower down on the plant (growers call this lollipopping). Some growers have a hard time with it because you're removing spots where the plant planned to grow buds. But the payoff is worth it. When buds start forming low on the plant, they don't get enough light because the canopy above shades them out. Leave those nodes and the plant wastes energy feeding lower buds that never stand a chance of getting big. Pruning the weaker nodes to give the remaining flowers the best shot at growing is a great way to lock in big buds.

Training:
training is the other way to keep all your buds at the same height so they all get enough light. Plants naturally grow unevenly, with some stems and branches falling short of others. To fix that, you either top the plant (cut off the main tip) or use ties to shape it so all the branches end up level. When the branches sit at the same height, the plant spreads its nutrients evenly and every bud gets the ideal amount of light to bulk up.
Lighting is hugely important. Plants need enough space between them for every part of the plant to get good light. Indoors you have total control over the lighting, so make sure it's set up right.
If you want your plants to put out ripe, abundant buds, they need top-notch nutrients to stay healthy. Nitrogen and phosphorus play a huge role in building massive buds if you use the right amounts at the right point in the grow. For example, nitrogen helps the plant grow strong early on. A plant that gets a healthy start and grows fast will be able to produce bigger flowers later.
Once the plant starts building buds, it needs less nitrogen. That's when phosphorus earns its keep, because it helps buds get big, heavy and dense. There's compost and other amendments you can add to the soil throughout the grow to help your plants, but the most important thing is to start with excellent soil.

Plants take carbon (C) from the air (which contains CO₂) and hydrogen (H) from water (H₂O) to make carbohydrates. They then release the oxygen (O) and store the carbohydrates as glucose.
Outdoor air usually carries around 400 PPM of CO₂. That's enough for most plants and covers what they need to put out bigger buds in an indoor grow. You can give them all the CO₂ they need just by making sure there's always fresh air in the grow space.
An ideal ventilation setup has: an exhaust fan to pull out the hot air around the plants (add a carbon filter to cut the smell), an intake fan to bring fresh air into the grow space, and extra fans to keep air moving around all the plants. Fresh air is crucial for big buds.
The best way to make sure your buds grow healthy and fat is to combine technique, training and good management of everything they need to grow. But above all, it's the grower's eye that makes the difference between a “meh” plant and an extraordinary one. The grower's passion, care and attention to detail are what turn a grow into big, fat buds, which, let's be honest, is what we're all after.
How do you make buds denser?
If you're looking to make your buds denser, a few methods can help. First, make sure your plants are getting enough light, water and nutrients to grow healthy. You can also use pruning and training to focus the plant's energy on the buds, removing unnecessary leaves and branches that steal nutrients and light. Another option is a bloom-specific fertilizer, which can help push big, resinous buds. Defoliation (stripping some fan leaves) can also encourage denser buds. Finally, remember that harvest timing matters: watch for the signs that your plant is ripe. With these methods and a bit of patience, you can boost your buds at home and pull in harvests of big, dense colas.
