How to Make a Gravity Bong in 10 Minutes (and Why It Hits So Hard)

Two plastic bottles, some foil and a little water: here's how to build a gravity bong step by step and how to use it without coughing up a lung.

A gravity bong is a homemade water pipe that uses falling water to push smoke straight into your lungs, and it delivers a seriously heavy hit of THC that can be way too much for a rookie.

Powered by water and gravity, this DIY bong works by sinking a bottle or chamber topped with a bowl of weed into a bigger bottle or bucket of water, then lifting it to pull in smoke.

Building one, or even wrapping your head around how it works, can seem a little confusing at first, but we've got you covered. Here's the step-by-step on how to make a gravity bong.

How to make a gravity bong: what you'll need

  • A plastic bottle with a cap
  • A bucket or a 2-liter plastic bottle
  • Aluminum foil
  • A box cutter or sharp knife
  • Something to poke holes with
  • Cannabis

Bongs can feel a little intimidating if you don't know where to start, but learning how to make a homemade bong is a lot easier than it looks. All it takes is a bit of ingenuity and determination, and in under 10 minutes you can build your own gravity bong out of stuff you've probably already got lying around.

How to make a bong, step by step

To make a gravity bong, you'll need to:

  • Step 1: Use the knife to cut the bottom off the half-liter or 1-liter bottle (a soda bottle works great). How much smoke ends up in your lungs depends on how tall the bottle is, so be careful not to cut off too much.
  • Step 2: Cut the top off the big 2-liter bottle and fill it about two-thirds of the way with water. That water is what makes your homemade bottle bong work.
  • Step 3: Take the cap off the smaller bottle and use the box cutter or scissors to poke a few small holes in it. Don't make them so big that weed falls through into the water, but not so tiny that air can't flow through easily.
  • Step 4: Keep the aluminum foil handy, because you'll need it. Wrap the cap you just poked holes in and shape the foil into a little bowl to hold your weed. The point of the foil is to keep your cannabis from falling into the water and getting ruined. Trim off the excess and shape the foil so your herb stays put.

On the other hand, if you've got a metal or ceramic bong bowl in your stash, you can fit that into the cap instead for a better smoke. In that case, you can skip the foil.

  • Step 5: Use the box cutter or scissors to poke holes in the foil. Go easy so you don't tear it or mess it up too much; you only need 3 to 5 holes for air to flow freely.
  • Step 6: Pack your strain of choice into the little foil bowl, but don't screw the cap on just yet.
  • Step 7: Now for what's arguably the trickiest part of the gravity bong. Follow these instructions so everything goes smoothly:

a- First, sink the smaller bottle into the center of the bigger one until only the mouth of the bottle is sticking out above the water.

b- Now careful: screw the foil-wrapped cap onto the top of the bottle.

  • Step 8: Light the weed and slowly, gently lift the smaller bottle up while it fills with smoke. If it doesn't fill up, check your gravity bong: make sure the cap is on tight and properly screwed in, and that the bottle doesn't have any holes in it.

If your gravity bong has a leak, it won't work. That's why it sometimes takes a couple of tries before you get the hang of it.

  • Step 9: Once the bottle is full of smoke, carefully unscrew the cap and put your mouth over the opening.
  • Step 10: Finally, slowly push the bottle back down, so the water rushing in pushes the smoke into your lungs.

You'll notice the smoke from a homemade gravity bong feels much cooler, since it sits over water before you inhale it. That said, we guarantee it'll hit you with a huge dose of THC. If you want to enjoy your herb the right way, pick a good moment and don't take in too much smoke.

How does a gravity bong work?

Using a gravity bong doesn't take much science. Here's how a bottle bong works: you light the bowl and slowly pull the bottle up, which fills the chamber with smoke. Then you unscrew the cap, put your mouth over the opening and push the bottle down; gravity and water pressure push the smoke straight into your lungs.

The chamber of a homemade gravity bong is usually bigger than a regular bong's, so a single hit tends to pack a massive amount of smoke.

The nice thing about these bongs is that they're easy to make at home with just a few supplies.

How a gravity bong works

Gravity bongs can make even the most seasoned smokers cough, so go easy with them. If you're just getting into bongs, or cannabis in general, start with small hits and work your way up slowly.
