What are moon rocks?

Moon rocks are cannabis buds coated in a concentrate like hash oil or wax and then rolled in kief. That triple layer of flower, concentrate and kief pushes the THC way past regular bud, and they usually taste great too. Gorgeous to look at and hard to resist, they're basically the bonbons of the weed world.

The catch with this gourmet look is that some sellers use a flashy coating to hide low-grade bud underneath. In legal markets, moon rocks run somewhere between $40 and $60 a gram. On the black market they tend to cost more, and you're also more likely to end up with mediocre weed dressed up to look premium. 

The format was a hit the moment it showed up, but it didn't take long for people to notice that not every moon rock lived up to the hype on all three fronts: flower, concentrate and kief. Your best bet is always to buy from a legal source, but we'd also love for you to get creative, make your own moon rocks and tell us how it went.

How do you make moon rocks?

To make your own moon rocks, pick a big, dense bud loaded with trichomes. Use a small brush to paint the bud with the cannabis oil or concentrate of your choice. If you went with wax, warm it up in your hands first so it gets workable and you can mold it around the bud. Finally, grab the coated bud with tweezers and roll it in kief until the whole surface is covered. Let it dry and that's it! You've got yourself a moon rock.
