How to Make Weed Bread: Cannabis Burger Buns From Scratch
Infuse the oil, knead the dough, bake the buns: a simple cannabis bread for burgers and sandwiches.
To make weed bread, you first infuse butter or oil with decarboxylated cannabis, then use that cannabis oil in place of regular fat in a simple yeast dough. The recipe below makes burger buns or sandwich bread with a dose you control by how much herb goes into your oil.
Cooking with weed is one of the tastiest (and most fun) ways to enjoy the plant. You get to eat something you love, and when you ingest cannabis, you also get its psychoactive effects.
Bread is a classic edible because it goes with everything. Today we're talking specifically about burger buns, the bar-food staple that's taken over menus everywhere because you can stack just about anything between the two halves.
So, what happens when you mix a burger bun with weed? You get the ultimate combo for fans of both.
Before you bake: how to dose cannabis bread
CBD keeps getting more popular as people discover what it may do for them. THC, on the other hand, brings the psychoactive kick behind the classic high, but it has its own potential benefits too. Now imagine working these cannabinoids into your home cooking. Pretty great, right? But what's the right dose for bread, brownies, cookies and every other edible?
Everyone's endocannabinoid system is different, so the right dose is different too. Some people are fine with 3 mg, while others won't feel much until they go a lot higher.
If you're new to cannabis, start low and go slow with small doses that give you a gentle high or the medicinal effect you're after. From there, adjust up or down to suit you in each edible you make. You can also check out this article on finding the right dose for you.

A lot of people find the taste of CBD oil kind of nasty. Cooking with it is a good way to hide that flavor and may even help with absorption. Even better, a burger bun recipe lets you pile on whatever you want: eggs, meat, veggies and more. It's a killer combo.
Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, so you can infuse whatever fat you like. For cooking, we recommend butter or oil.
So before you make the bread, you'll need your cannabis-infused fat ready to go.
How to make cannabis butter or oil
Before we get to the burger buns, here's the step-by-step for making cannabutter or cannabis oil. You'll need:
- 1 cup, or roughly 7-14 grams (¼-½ oz), of decarboxylated, ground cannabis
- 1 cup of olive oil or butter
- A double boiler, a saucepan or a slow cooker
- A storage container
- Cheesecloth
First, a word on decarboxylation. When you smoke a joint, the heat triggers a process called decarboxylation, which is what turns on the high. With edibles it's different: you have to decarb the weed before it goes into the food, or you might not feel a thing.
Decarbing is just a matter of heat. Spread out your ground weed and bake it for 30-45 minutes at 220-245°F (105-120°C).
Now back to the cannabutter. You can make it in a saucepan, a double boiler or a slow cooker:
- In a saucepan, heat the oil and decarbed cannabis together on low for an hour at 130-150°F (55-65°C), stirring often and making sure nothing scorches.
- With a double boiler, put water in the bottom pot and the oil and decarbed weed in the top, then cook on low at the same temperature as the saucepan method for about an hour.
- The slow cooker method is pretty similar: put the weed and oil in a sealed jar and cook it in a little water for about an hour at 130-150°F.
After about an hour, take the oil off the heat, let it cool and strain it through the cheesecloth into your container.
Want a milder oil? Just use less herb. Want it stronger? Use more. Now that your cannabis oil is ready, let's get to the bread.

Cannabis bread recipe
Here's what you'll need for a batch of killer weed burger buns that'll have everyone asking for seconds.
- ½ cup warm water (110°F / 45°C)
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons cannabis-infused olive oil
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
How to make homemade cannabis bread, step by step
- Start by mixing the warm water, yeast, sugar, salt and cannabis oil in a large bowl.
Stir in two cups of the flour and shape the mix into a ball, then work in the rest of the flour until the dough is smooth and not sticky. - Put the dough in a greased medium bowl, cover it and let it rise until it doubles in size.
- Once it's doubled, punch it down and shape it into balls or a loaf. Place on a greased baking sheet and let it rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- Finally, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30 to 40 minutes, until golden brown.
This cannabis bread is seriously good, with the perfect texture for sandwiches or burgers. Sundays are made for cooking something tasty, so here's your excuse.
Food is one area where the possibilities seem endless, whether you're making therapeutic meals or turning everyday favorites into something that'll get you nicely baked.
With cannabutter or cannabis oil, almost any dish you can think of, this bread included, can be dosed with cannabinoids for a psychoactive (and maybe even nutritional) twist. Just remember edibles take a while to kick in, so wait before going back for another bun.
Weed bread is a treat you'll want to make again and again. What are you waiting for?
