7 Weed Recipes to Get You High: Cannabutter, Ice Cream, Chocolate and More
Cooking with cannabis is a great way to skip the smoke. Start with cannabutter, then turn it into tea, ice cream, chocolate and even pizza.
7 easy weed recipes to get you high
These seven weed recipes all start from the same base, cannabutter, which you then turn into cannabis tea, ice cream and chocolate, plus box-mix brownies, cannabis milk and a pot pizza. Cooking with weed is a total win, but it can be hard to know where to start, especially if you've never cooked before.
Edibles are also a great option for people who want cannabis without smoking or vaping, whether for medical or recreational use, and they put a special twist on your recipes so you can enjoy your food in a whole new way.
Be really careful with the dose in these recipes. When you eat weed, your body processes it differently than when you smoke it, where a big part of the THC goes up in smoke (the old rule of thumb says you only get about 40%). Bottom line: the psychoactive effect hits harder, so keep your doses in check and start low.
Here are 7 cannabis recipes that are perfect for getting started:
Cannabutter
Super quick and easy to make, and a must-have in your kitchen, since so many other cannabis recipes call for it.
Ingredients:
250 g (about 1 cup) butter (vegan butter works too)
500 ml (about 2 cups) water
25 to 45 g (about 1 to 1.5 oz) cannabis (flowers or resin-coated sugar leaves, depending on the potency and flavor you're after)
Directions:
First, simmer the ground weed in water over very low heat for 20 minutes. This pulls out the chlorophyll flavor (that grassy taste) and most of the impurities, so it's ready to mix with the butter.
Next, melt the butter in water over the lowest heat possible, always keeping the water from boiling. Once the butter is completely melted, add the weed.
Keep it on the lowest heat and stir the whole time, and you'll see the butter slowly turn greener. Stir for about 30 minutes, until you have smooth, even butter.
Once you're sure you've got a smooth, greenish mixture, strain it through a sieve to make sure no plant matter is left behind.
Let it cool at room temperature for a couple of hours, then put it in the fridge and let it sit for 24 hours.
You'll end up with a layer of butter floating on top of the water, with a texture a lot like store-bought butter, but way greener.

Cannabis tea
Quick and easy.
Just make a cup of tea like you always do and stir in a teaspoon of cannabutter. Sweeten it with honey and enjoy, but remember it's still an edible, so give it time to kick in.
Weed ice cream
Ice cream is the perfect way to wrap up a meal or a hangout with friends. It's just four steps.
Heat 500 ml (about 2 cups) heavy cream in a pot over medium heat until it boils.
In another pan, melt 50 grams (about 3.5 tablespoons) cannabutter with 75 grams (about 1/3 cup) sugar.
Mash some fruit, like bananas or raspberries, in a bowl. Combine everything and mix gently.
Pour the mixture into a large container and freeze it overnight.

Weed brownies
Here it is: the most famous weed edible of all time! They're so tasty and easy that they're hard to resist...
All you need is some weed, oil and a box of brownie mix. First, make sure your brownie mix calls for oil. That part is essential.
To start, you need to infuse the oil with the weed.
Grind 4 to 12 grams of flower (depending on how strong you want them) as finely as you can. Put it in a pot and pour in the amount of oil the brownie mix instructions call for.
Heat over medium for about 30 minutes, stirring now and then, so the oil soaks up all the cannabinoids from the flower.
Finally, let the oil cool and strain out the plant matter.
Now you've got weed oil ready to go with your brownie mix instructions!
Cannabis milk:
Cannabis milk is another way to take your weed as an edible. Here's a basic recipe for making cannabis milk at home:
Ingredients:
- 3 to 4 grams of cannabis buds or 10 to 15 grams of ground cannabis leaves
- 2 cups milk (cow's milk, almond milk or any other plant-based milk)
- 1 tablespoon fat (butter, coconut oil or another fat)
- Optional: sweetener to taste (sugar, honey, stevia, etc.)
Steps:
- Grind the cannabis buds or leaves in a grinder or break them up by hand.
- Preheat the oven to 115 °C (240 °F) and spread the buds or leaves on a baking sheet.
- Bake for about 30 to 40 minutes to activate the cannabinoids through decarboxylation. This step is key to getting the most out of your cannabis.
- In a small pot, heat the milk and fat over medium-low heat. Add sweetener if you like.
- Add the activated buds or leaves to the warm milk and stir well.
- Let the milk and cannabis simmer gently for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Don't let it boil.
- After 30 minutes, take the pot off the heat and let the mixture cool.
- Once it's cool, strain the cannabis milk through a sieve or cheesecloth to remove the plant matter.
- Pour the cannabis milk into a clean container and keep it in the fridge until you're ready to use it.
Cannabis chocolate:
Here's a basic recipe for making cannabis chocolate at home:
Ingredients:
- 28 grams (1 oz) unsweetened or high-cacao chocolate
- 1/4 cup cannabutter (make it ahead by infusing butter with cannabis)
- Optional: sweetener to taste (sugar, honey, stevia, etc.)
- Optional: extra add-ins to customize your chocolate (nuts, dried fruit, etc.)
Steps:
- Break or chop the chocolate into small pieces and put them in a heat-safe bowl.
- Melt the cannabutter in a saucepan over low heat, or in the microwave in 30-second bursts, until it's liquid.
- Pour the melted cannabutter over the chocolate and stir until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
- If you want it sweeter, add sweetener to taste and stir until it's fully dissolved.
- If you're adding extras like nuts or dried fruit, fold them in gently so they're evenly spread through the chocolate.
- Pour the chocolate mixture into candy molds or onto a tray lined with wax paper.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely set.
- Once the chocolate is firm, pop it out of the molds or cut it into pieces.
Weed pizza:
Making a weed pizza means working cannabis into the dough, the sauce or the toppings. Keep in mind, though, that cannabis can be psychoactive, and you need to know your local laws and regulations. It's also key to consume responsibly and be aware of the possible effects.
Here's a basic recipe for making a weed pizza:
Ingredients:
- Pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
- Tomato sauce or pizza sauce
- Shredded cheese (mozzarella or your pick)
- Extra pizza toppings (ham, mushrooms, olives, etc.)
- Decarbed (activated) ground cannabis (the amount depends on your preference and personal tolerance)
Steps:
- Make the pizza dough following your recipe or the package instructions. Make sure you have enough dough for the size of pizza you want.
- Preheat the oven to the temperature recommended for your pizza.
- In a bowl, mix the ground cannabis into the tomato or pizza sauce. The amount can vary with your preference and tolerance, but remember to keep it moderate.
- Stretch the dough onto a pizza pan or pizza stone, keeping the thickness even.
- Spread the cannabis sauce over the dough. Make sure it's evenly distributed so the effect is consistent across every slice.
- Add the cheese and any toppings you like.
- Bake the pizza in the preheated oven according to the dough recipe, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Take the pizza out of the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.
