Cannabis Buñuelos: An Easy Recipe for Weed-Infused Fritters

Golden, sugar-dusted fried dough puffs made with cannabutter, plus four infused basics to keep in your kitchen.

BY CosechaLibre Editorial7 MIN READ

Cannabis buñuelos are small balls of choux-style dough, made with cannabutter, fried until golden and rolled in sugar. Think beignets or donut holes, with a buzz. They're popular in Spain and across Latin America, the recipe is easy to follow, and the result is a seriously sweet edible.

Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 500 g (about 4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 60 g (about 4 tbsp) cannabutter
  • 250 ml (1 cup) water
  • A splash of milk (optional)
  • Olive oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan, then add the cannabutter and let it melt. Once it's melted, stir in the flour and the milk (if you're using it) and keep stirring for two or three minutes, until you get a fairly stiff dough that pulls away from the sides of the pan. Take it off the heat and let it cool.
  2. Add the eggs and work the dough well until it's completely smooth and even.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. If you have a buñuelo spoon (the kind with a hole in the middle), use it to scoop the dough and drop the balls into the hot oil. Keep them small and don't crowd the pan, or they'll stick together as they puff up. No special spoon? Any spoon works, and you can shape them however you like.
  4. Fry the buñuelos until they're golden brown on both sides.
  5. Finally, roll them in sugar while they're still warm and dig in. You can serve them with honey or whatever else your imagination comes up with.

Heads up: Eat these cannabis buñuelos responsibly, and make sure you know how strong your cannabutter is and how it hits you. Edibles take a lot longer to kick in than smoking, so be patient and don't reach for a second (or fifth) one too soon.

Save your cannabis buñuelos for special occasions, and share the recipe with friends who appreciate a one-of-a-kind food experience.

Basic cannabis recipes to know

Cannabutter

Making cannabutter might sound like something only experts pull off, but it isn't. It's simple, and you can do it at home.

The best part about cannabutter is that it works in a ton of dishes, basically anything in the cannabis kitchen.

You'll need 1 lb (about 450 g) of butter or margarine, whatever you usually cook with, and 1/2 oz (about 14 g) of ground weed. Melt the butter in a pan and add the cannabis. Let it cook over low heat until the butter turns green from the herb. Strain it through a sieve and chill it in the fridge. That's your own cannabutter, ready for anything you want to cook, sweet or savory. The sky's the limit.

Pot brownies

Everybody's heard of these legendary treats, and for chocolate and cannabis fans they're the starter recipe everyone should make at least once.

The easiest way to do it is to grab a box of brownie mix from your favorite brand. Obviously you'll also need weed. For a batch of these, we recommend somewhere between 4 and 18 grams of cannabis, depending on how strong you want them.

Next, heat the amount of oil the box calls for and add the weed to the pan. Let the herb and oil cook over low to medium heat for about 30 minutes.

Then strain out the plant material and add the oil to the brownie mix. Follow the instructions on the box, and you'll end up with a tray of delicious pot brownies.

Cannabis oil

There are plenty of ways to make cannabis oil, but here's a simple one: no real cooking involved, just a little patience and good-quality weed.

Jar of homemade cannabis oil

So, how do you make cannabis oil? Here's the step by step:

  • Wash the buds in hot water (the idea is to clean the weed and help decarboxylate it at the same time). You can also decarb it in the oven, which is more reliable.
  • Get a glass jar big enough for the amount of oil you're making.
  • Pour in your favorite extra virgin olive oil, or whichever one you think will pair best with the strain you picked. Remember the weed can be CBD-rich, THC-rich or both.
  • Add about 20 to 25 g (roughly 3/4 oz) of dried, cured, unground buds.
  • Let it steep somewhere dark and dry for a couple of weeks, giving it a stir now and then so the cannabis releases its compounds.
  • Once that time's up, it's ready to use.
  • Don't take the buds out of the jar.
  • If the mix turns out too strong, pour it into a new glass jar and top it up with about a quarter more extra virgin olive oil to mellow it out. Shake it hard and let it rest in the dark for a couple of days so it settles.
  • Your cannabis oil is now ready to use under the tongue, on the skin or as a food supplement.

Potential benefits of cannabis oil:

  • Muscle pain and arthritis
Many patients use it for chronic pain and arthritis, and some studies suggest it can help when other medications fall short.
  • Anxiety
THC can have a relaxing effect on the nervous system, and some people report it helps take the edge off anxiety (although high doses can do the opposite).
  • Nausea and vomiting
Cannabis has been used for decades to ease nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and other medical conditions.
  • Epilepsy
Some studies suggest cannabis may help reduce seizures in certain patients with epilepsy.
  • Glaucoma
THC and other cannabinoids can temporarily lower intraocular pressure, although the effect is short-lived and it isn't a standard glaucoma treatment.

Cannabis tea

If you want a cannabis drink that won't hit you like smoking does, weed tea is a great option for people who are after its medicinal effects.

One cup can bring on deep relaxation, both in the body and in the head. You can make it with buds or even with leftover cannabis leaves, and your tea will still come out great.

To make this drinkable edible, you'll need 1 g of buds per cup, or 2 g if you're using leaves instead. If you go with leaves, toss in a loose bud or two for a stronger flavor. You'll also need butter, about a small teaspoon per cup, because cannabinoids are fat-soluble and don't dissolve in plain water. You can use milk instead of butter (a splash per cup of water), but butter makes it stronger.

How to make cannabis tea, step by step:

  1. First, crush the leaves or buds as finely as you can. Once they're well ground, add the butter and mix it thoroughly with the dry weed. If you're using milk, add it to the pot at the same time as the buds.
  2. Once it's well mixed, bring the water to a boil, using 1.5 cups of water for every cup you plan to drink. Don't add the weed until the water is at a full boil, and as soon as you add it, turn the heat down to the lowest setting.
  3. Stir over low heat for 30 minutes, until the butter has fully melted and blended with the water. Stir slowly but constantly.
  4. When you can't see any foam from the butter anymore, it's ready. Pour it through a strainer into your cup.

Drink it right away, before it cools down, because as the temperature drops the butterfat separates from the water. If you made it with milk, you can let it sit at room temperature, since milk is already liquid and won't solidify the way butter does.
