How to Make a Space Cake: A Step-by-Step Recipe (and How Long It Lasts)
Decarb, infuse, bake, then wait: the classic Amsterdam-style weed cake, how long it lasts, and a few bonus recipes for your cannabis kitchen.
To make a space cake, you decarb ground cannabis buds in the oven, infuse them into butter over low heat for 2 to 3 hours, then use that cannabutter in a simple cake batter and bake. Expect it to kick in anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours and to last 4 to 8 hours, so cut small pieces and wait before going back for seconds. A space cake is simply a tasty weed edible that pairs cake with the effects of cannabis, and here's the step-by-step recipe using cannabutter and buds.
Ingredients:
- 5-10 grams (about 1/4 oz) of cannabis buds (or the equivalent in trim)
- 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter
- 1 cup (200 g) sugar
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (250 g) hemp flour (or regular flour if you prefer)
Instructions:
Step 1: Make the cannabutter
1.1. Decarb the buds:
- Preheat the oven to 110 °C (230 °F).
- Grind the buds and put them in a glass baking dish.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30-40 minutes to decarboxylate (activate) the cannabinoids.
1.2. Infuse the butter:
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Add the decarbed buds and stir well.
- Cook the mixture on low heat for 2-3 hours, making sure it never boils. This lets the cannabinoids infuse into the butter.
- Strain through a fine-mesh strainer to separate the plant material from the infused butter.
- Let the cannabutter cool to room temperature before using it in the recipe.

Step 2: Make the space cake batter
2.1. Mix the batter:
- Preheat the oven to 190 °C (375 °F).
- In a large bowl, mix the cannabutter, milk, sugar, eggs and flour.
- Add the baking powder and salt, and mix until the batter is smooth.
2.2. Bake:
- Grease a baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- Pour in the batter and spread it evenly.
- Bake for about 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Step 3: Dose it responsibly
3.1. Dosing:
- Cut the space cake into small pieces so you can control your dose.
- Start with a small piece, especially if you're new to edibles.
- Effects can take up to 2-3 hours to fully show up, so be patient and don't eat more until you feel the full effect.
Step 4: Effects and things to keep in mind
4.1. What a space cake feels like:
- A space cake can produce a stronger, longer-lasting high than smoking or vaping.
- Effects vary with dose and personal tolerance, so go easy.
4.2. Strain choice and dosing:
- The strain you use will shape both the effects and the flavor of your space cake.
- Experiment with different doses and ratios of butter to buds to find the combo that works for you.
A space cake is a fun, delicious way to enjoy cannabis. Always consume responsibly and adjust the dose to your tolerance. Enjoy your tasty, trippy cake!

How long does a space cake high last?
How long a space cake lasts depends on several things: the dose, your tolerance, the THC content of the weed you used, your metabolism and other factors that come with eating cannabis. In general, the effect lasts longer than smoking or vaping because of the way your body processes cannabinoids when you eat them.
Typically, a space cake starts to kick in 30 minutes to 2 hours after you eat it and can last 4 to 8 hours, sometimes longer. Edibles have a slower onset and a longer ride than smoking or vaping because your body has to digest and metabolize the cannabinoids before you feel the full effect.
Since everyone reacts to edibles differently, caution and patience are key. If you're new to edibles, start with a low dose and wait at least two hours before deciding whether to have more. Overdoing it can lead to an intense and potentially unpleasant high, so know your limits and respect them.
More and more people use cannabis these days, for all kinds of reasons, from plain love of the herb to the benefits it brings many people, and there are countless ways to consume this ancient plant. So here are a few more recipes to enjoy cannabis at its best.

A few tips before you start cooking with cannabis
- If you want to bring cannabinoids into the kitchen, think fat. Compounds like THC and CBD are fat-soluble, so the most effective, versatile and healthy way to add cannabis to food is with infused butter, ghee or oil. Their high fat content binds the cannabinoids and helps your body absorb them. Plus, butter, ghee and oil are kitchen staples anyway.
- Some cannabis fans have also started experimenting with raw honey infused with cannabinoids. Good raw honey is often used for allergies and sore throats, so for people who catch colds all year, keeping a little "hemp honey" on hand could be handy.
- We've talked before about consuming cannabis after decarboxylation. But what is decarboxylation? It means heating raw cannabis to change the chemical structure of its natural cannabinoids. This standard step turns acidic compounds like THCA and CBDA into the more familiar and bioavailable THC and CBD.
That said, some people claim eating raw weed has major health benefits. There's a growing movement of cannabis fans who juice, blend or eat raw cannabis flower every day. According to them, raw cannabis delivers great nutrition thanks to its high levels of antioxidants, terpenes and chlorophyll.
With so little data, it's not clear whether this is the "healthiest" way to eat cannabis. Still, eating high-quality, lab-tested raw flower doesn't appear to be unsafe, and those raw buds won't get you high.
Easy cannabis recipes
Cannabutter
Making cannabutter might sound like something only experts do, but it isn't. It's simple and you can do it at home.
The great thing about cannabutter is that you can use it in thousands of dishes in your cannabis kitchen.
You'll need 1 pound (about 450 g) of butter, margarine or whatever fat you cook with, and 1/2 ounce (about 14 g) of ground weed. Melt the butter in a pan and add the weed. Let it simmer on low until the butter takes on a green tint from the herb. Strain it and chill it in the fridge. That's it: your own cannabutter, ready for anything from sweet to savory recipes. The sky's the limit.
Pot brownies
We've all heard of these legendary treats, and for chocolate-and-weed fans they're the base recipe everyone should master.
For the easiest possible version, grab a box of brownie mix from your favorite brand. Obviously you'll need weed too. For these crazy brownies we recommend 4 to 18 grams of cannabis.
Next, heat the amount of oil the box calls for and add the weed to the pan. Let the weed and oil cook over low to medium heat for about 30 minutes.
Then strain out the plant material and add the oil to the brownie mix. Follow the box instructions from there and you'll end up with delicious pot brownies.
Cannabis oil
There are tons of recipes for making cannabis oil, but here's an easy one: no complicated steps, just a little patience and good-quality weed.
